Has anyone/knows anyone who did a MLS (specializing in archives/preservation) and then a PhD in history? I'm thinking of applying this fall for when I'm out of the library school. I'm just not sure if I'll get the "but why didn't you do a master's in history?" question over and over and over....

Managerial aspirations [05 Jul 2008|07:13pm]

Hi everyone.  I've been reading for a few months now and honestly want to thank you all for providing helpful questions and answers that I assume are on everyones minds.

I am very interested in pursuing managerial positions in libraries.  It seems like it would be the perfect type of position for my personality.  I was wondering from your experiences what you think is the best way to begin moving toward that.

Personally I do not know anyone very well who has taken library science or knows much about it.  I have been trying like crazy to boost my GPA to the highest possible point it can be before my last two semesters and applications start.  I'm sitting at about a 3.5 but my CGPA is less than stellar.  I am looking to apply anywhere in Canada.  McGill, Western, UBC would be ideal because i have close family in each city to stay with.  I guess what I'm trying to ask is to get where I want to be, what other steps do you all recommend I take to get there, what I can expect from either of those schools programs and your personal opinions (please do not spare a single thought - maybe I need to be brought down to earth!) on what school would be the best fit.

Thanks so much.

Hello!

I've been accepted to the master's program with the archives management concentration at Simmons and the joint master's (archives/library science) at UBC (squee!).  Now I have to select which school that I want to attend.  Any help, advice, or opinions would be greatly appreciated!

A Softer World: July 4th [04 Jul 2008|12:14pm]

Friday again! I am getting all worked up about this Dark Knight movie that's coming out. And, I will admit it, it's Heath Ledger's Joker that has me squirming in anticipation. The stuff we see in the ads is so good. His voice is this great mix of Jack Nicholson and Pennywise the clown. And he looks so demented, not just the makeup, but his tilted hand clap, him swaying out the window of the police car, like the music is moving him. I'm excited.

I read a few interviews with Christopher Nolan, and in one he compares the Joker character to the shark in Jaws. No back story, just carving a swath of destruction across the movie. The Joker ought to be an insane, outright violent anarchist artist killer, a man who cannot be reasoned with or understood. He's not a super villain, he's the monster in a horror movie. And that's what this looks like.

I'm glad Blanche isn't my landlady! [04 Jul 2008|03:45am]

After the 8,435th viewing, something finally occurred to me -- why do Dorothy and Rose always have to chip in with home repairs when Blanche is technically their landlord?

And in "Second Motherhood" (1st Season) she's off cavorting on some millionaire's private jet throughout the whole episode, while Dorothy and Rose try to figure out how to fix the plumbing!

If she was my landlord I would have moved out and gone to live in a retirement condo instead of doing all the damn repair work myself. Good thing she finally shared the title with them in the final season, even if they all did end up moving out a few months later!

job interview preps [03 Jul 2008|11:59am]

I just got back from the ALA conference and one workshop about interviewing said that you can look up people in LinkedIN or ask people in LinkedIN about people who you will be interviewing with.

Is this possible? I have an interview in a week for a part time job and I know who I am interviewing with but i'd like to find out more about the person(s) I am interviewing with so I can show I've done the research.

Thanks!

need help [03 Jul 2008|09:57am]

Hi everyone! I am looking for a little advice. I have been a stay at home mom for a few years and now that my little girl is in school, I finally have time to pursue my dream. I would like to become a librarian.  How do I do it? What degrees are needed? Can I get a Social Sciences, History, or English Degree first and then go on to get a MS?  Someone told me that's possible. There are NO colleges around here that offer Library Science.  Is there an online Library Science program? or a Library Science MS online?  What type of degree do I need to work in a public library setting?

Sorry for all the questions... I am a beginner at this!

Experience for a future School Media Specialist [03 Jul 2008|01:01am]

[twomojitos]
I'm going to graduate with a sociology degree in May 2009 and I want to go to library school to become a School Media Specialist. I'm trying to plan on what I should do for a job while going through graduate school. When trying to get hired as a Media Specialist, which job experience would be more beneficial to have on my resume? Library experience or teaching experience? I am currently a substitute teacher, would this do anything to help me get a job? I know it's not real teaching experience but I don't know if it's enough to get my foot in the door. Also, what is the salary of a media specialist? The same as a teacher with a master's degree or is it considered a specialization? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks =)

American to UBC SLAIS -- student visa & on-campus housing [02 Jul 2008|05:19pm]

I was wondering if anyone could help clarify what my financial statement needs to look like when I submit my application for a Canadian student visa. I'm supposed to show that I have adequate funds to attend, but since it's going to cost roughtly $20K, am I supposed to apply for a Stafford loan, wait till it gets approved and then submit my visa, probably at the border? Or do they just want to know I have a valid bank account? Personally I can't imagine someone keeping $20K in a savings account.

Also, what do you guys think about living at a residental college like St. John's or Green College? I think it'd be great to live in a smart, well-read and well-fed community. Any comments?

UBC Students vs. Simmons Students [02 Jul 2008|05:18pm]

libraryschool

[rosetopography]

Wow, wish I had known about this community a lot earlier. You guys rock!

Right now I'm trying to decide between UBC and Simmons for a MLIS.

If people could comment on how big class sections and graduating classes are, as well as on how students interact with each other, I'd really appreciate that. I have heard that Simmons is thought by some to be more prestigious, but the graduate school experience I'd like to have is not solely limited to studying. I'm all for putting in the time and getting good grades, but I'd also like to be around people who wouldn't mind having a few drinks, talking some smack and then finishing it off at a diner for breakfast at 3 A.M. breakfast.

Great to be a part of this community!

Peace and love to you all!

Because we've already crossed that line... [02 Jul 2008|05:04pm]

I was reading a magazine today, it may have been one that begins with G and ends with lobe, but hey, like I said we've already crossed that line. There was a very nice blurb about Rue going around with some sort of human society or animal cops to help rescue strays and then she also paid for all the animals to be spayed/nuetered.
I thoguht it was a nice story.
